Unity in Diversity, Progress in Faith
The Association of Progressive Muslims of Canada (APMC) was founded in May 1998 by Mobeen Khaja with the vision of promoting a positive image of Muslims and core Islamic values such as peace, justice, respect, understanding, and equality. The Association aims to foster understanding among diverse communities and faith groups while serving the social, cultural, and educational needs of the Muslim community in Canada. APMC actively organizes events and projects that encourage dialogue and interaction, building bridges across different cultural and religious backgrounds.
The organization elects its Executive Officers and Board of Directors every two years, with Mobeen Khaja serving as president since its inception. The term "Progressive" in the Association's name reflects the belief that Islam is a dynamic, living religion, relevant in all times and circumstances. This principle is clearly articulated in the Preamble of the Constitution. APMC was incorporated in Ontario in 1998 and federally in 2002. The Association is active in interfaith dialogues and collaborates with various community organizations, governments, and NGOs. Mr. Khaja received the Order of Ontario in 2011 for his work in building bridges of understanding, and two Directors, Dr. Najmul Siddiqui (2015) and Dr. Dilkhush Panjwani (2018), have also been honored with the Order. In addition to its community work, the association established an annual scholarship at Trent University, first awarded in 2021. Mr. Khaja received an Honorary Doctorate in Laws from Trent University in June 2021.
